          Project Goal

Help Africans with speech difficulties to expand their horizons

          Location: South Africa

"They have been locked up in their bodies for so long. The progress is phenomenal.”

Professor Erna Alant is passionate about giving people with little or no speech a chance at life. She rejects widely held views that such people cannot be helped. "That’s consigning them to oblivion, and they don’t deserve that." In 1990, Alant founded the Centre for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (CAAC) at the University of Pretoria in South Africa, which is the only one of its kind in Africa.
