          Jean Dorst

          Ornithologist and author of numerous publications about tropical mountain and rain forest birds in particular, Jean Dorst has become increasingly involved in the problems of ecology, the protection of nature in general and the relationships between man and his environment. 

          Director of the Laboratory of Zoology at the French National Museum of Natural History, Professor Jean Dorst is a member of the French Academy of Sciences and has been entrusted with a range of important missions throughout the world by such organizations as the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

          Dorst obtained his doctorate in science at the University of Paris in 1949. He then entered the O.R.S.T.O.M. (Office de la recherche scientifique et technique outre-mer), and subsequently joined the staff of the French National Museum of Natural History of which he became director-general from 1976 to 1985.

          He has studied tropical mountain and rain forest birds in Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, Indonesia, Malaysia, Peru and Brazil, and devotes himself to this subject in his role of professor at the museum's department of zoology (mammals and birds). Jean Dorst has authored 600 scientific publications and 15 books reporting his scientific research; including Les migrations des oiseaux (also published in English under the title The Migrations of Birds), Les animaux voyageurs and Les oiseaux dans leur milieu.

          His more general publications have attracted an international audience. His books La force du vivant and Avant que nature meure (Before Nature Dies) have been translated into many languages.
