          Santiago Dexeus
          Spain, Born 1935

          Santiago Dexeus is a gynaecologist and obstetrician who plays a major role in the control of women's diseases, especially uterine cancer, in Spain. He established a leading institute for the training of gynaecologists and  contributes to international scientific exchange through his lecture tours, his scientific publications and his books on medical subjects for the general public.

          Dexeus graduated from medical school at the University of Barcelona in 1959, and received his doctorate, with special distinction, from the University of Madrid in 1968. He completed his specialization training in obstetrics and gynaecology in Barcelona, England, France, Italy and Switzerland.

          Dr Dexeus is head of the obstetrics and gynaecology department at the Institut Universitari Dexeus in Barcelona. ln April 1989, he was elected president of the European Society of Gynaecological Oncology; he is also a board member of the International Federation of Cervical Pathology and Colposcopy, vice-president of the Société Internationale Francophone de Chirurgie Pelvienne and honorary president of the Spanish Society of Cytology.

          Santiago Dexeus has written textbooks and monographs on gynaecology as well as a number of books on medical subjects intended for the public at large.
